20. National Wildlife Week 2026– October 2-8
National Wildlife Week is annually observed across India from 2 to 8 October to raise awareness about wildlife conservation and the protection of India’s rich biodiversity.
Key points:
- Theme: 2026 Theme: “Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife” Focus: Promoting habitat connectivity to support wildlife movement, survival and biodiversity conservation.
- Background: National Wildlife Week traces its origin to 1952, when the Government of India (GoI) constituted the Indian Board for Wildlife (IBWL) to promote wildlife conservation.
- From Day to Week: It was first observed as National Wildlife Day in 1955 and was expanded into a week-long observance in 1957, when the first National Wildlife Week was celebrated.
- Global Observance: The United Nations (UN) observes World Wildlife Day (WWD) annually on 3 March to raise awareness about the world’s wild animals and plants.
- The year 2026 marks the 72nd National Wildlife Week in India.
