TNPSC Attempts: No Universal Number, Check Eligibility Each Time

Updated: Oct 19, 2026
3 min read

How often can you sit for a TNPSC recruitment? Do not confuse a limit on examination attempts with a limit on fee concessions, applications or age. The 2025 Group IV notification and 2025 Group II/IIA notification set out post-wise age and qualification conditions; neither states a simple universal numerical exam-attempt cap applicable to all candidates. This observation about these notices is not a guarantee about a future recruitment. Read the current official notice and Instructions to Applicants each time.

What actually limits a future application?

Age: In the 2025 Group IV notice, age is determined as of 1 July 2025 and depends on post, community and applicable concession. For many non-reserved Group IV rows the maximum is 32 years with the wording “should not have completed”; the VAO minimum is 21 while many other rows start at 18. A person can therefore be eligible for one post but not another. See the age-limit walkthrough for an example. Do not use 2025’s date to calculate eligibility for a later examination.

Qualifications: Some Group IV posts need SSLC, others additionally need typewriting, shorthand or a degree. The Group II/IIA notification also gives post-specific degree rules. You need the specified qualification by the date stipulated in the relevant notification; sitting for an examination before meeting it does not create eligibility later.

Other conditions: Knowledge of Tamil, community claims, experience and supporting certificates can be relevant. Registration and application windows, fees and the number of free fee-concession chances are different from the number of times you may take an exam. For instance, the 2025 Group IV notification mentions two free fee-concession chances for an ex-serviceman category; that is not a two-attempt exam limit.

How to answer “can I apply again?”

  1. Identify the exact new notification, recruitment year and post code.
  2. Read its eligibility, disqualification and age-concession sections along with Instructions to Applicants.
  3. Calculate age on that notification’s own reference date; review the qualification cut-off and documents.
  4. Check any category-specific rules, fee concessions and previous-service conditions separately.
  5. If still uncertain, ask TNPSC using the official contact details rather than assuming a rule from a previous exam.

Useful starting points: our post-wise qualification guide and the TNPSC notifications linked above. No article can replace the recruitment notice for your individual application.
