TNPSC Eligibility and Qualifications: Read the Post-wise Rules
TNPSC eligibility is decided post by post. A statement such as “Group IV needs only SSLC” is incomplete: some posts in the same examination require a degree or technical certificate. The 2025 official notifications below provide concrete examples. Always check the latest recruitment notification before applying because a different year can have different posts and rules.
Group IV: SSLC is a starting point, not a universal rule
In the 2025 Group IV notification, section 4.2, minimum general educational qualification means a pass in the Tamil Nadu SSLC exam. Junior Assistant in the Tamil Nadu Ministerial Service is listed with SSLC. But Typist in that service additionally needs the prescribed Government Technical Examination in Typewriting; Steno-Typist Grade III requires typewriting and shorthand, with permitted grade combinations stated in the post row. Other Group IV jobs are different: Junior Executive (Office) lists a degree and further training, while Forest Guard specifies a higher-secondary course with one of the named science subjects. Do not rely on the easiest post to establish your eligibility for all posts.
Group II and IIA: inspect the individual degree requirement
The 2025 Group II/IIA notification, section 4.2 lists many posts requiring a degree from a recognised university. Some require a particular discipline or additional qualification: the Forester row specifies science or engineering subjects, and an Assistant Section Officer row gives several qualification routes. Read the row for the exact post code and any conditions or preferences before deciding that a generic bachelors degree is enough. The notification also prescribes the order of study for a degree qualification and the date by which the candidate must possess it.
Tamil language and documents
Both notifications have a section 4.4 on adequate knowledge in Tamil. The condition can be met through Tamil as a language in specified examinations, Tamil-medium study, or the prescribed TNPSC Second Class Language Test (Full Test), subject to documentary proof. This is separate from the Tamil eligibility paper in the exam scheme: reading a summary of one requirement does not waive the other. Check the relevant notification for accepted mark sheets, technical certificates and the date on which qualifications must have been acquired.
