TNPSC Age Limits: Check Post, Category and Cut-off Date
There is no single age limit for every TNPSC recruitment. The post, community category, educational qualification and the date used to calculate age all matter. Use the official 2025 Group IV notification, section 4.1 as a worked example, not as a substitute for a later notification. Its age reference date is 1 July 2025; a 2026 or later recruitment can set a different date or limits.
Example: what the 2025 Group IV table actually says
For candidates in the notification’s “Others” category, section 4.1.1 shows a minimum age of 21 for Village Administrative Officer (VAO), and 18 for many other listed posts such as Junior Assistant and Typist. The upper age shown in that table is 32, expressed as an age the applicant “should not have completed” on the reference date. This corrects the often repeated claim that 30 is the general Group IV maximum. Forest posts have additional eligibility and physical standards; do not infer eligibility for one post from another row.
Section 4.1.2 separately lists BC (OBCM), BCM, MBC/DC, SC, SC(A) and ST applicants. Some rows have a stated higher maximum; for certain posts a note removes the maximum for applicants in those categories who have a qualification higher than the specified minimum. The same notification defines “no maximum age limit” as not having completed 60 on 1 July 2025 or at selection or appointment. It is therefore inaccurate to treat the phrase as unlimited age or to apply the exception to all posts and all candidates.
How to check your own age eligibility
- Locate the exact post name and post code in the live notification, not a general group-level summary.
- Read the applicable community table and any concession footnotes. Disability, destitute widow and ex-serviceman concessions have separate conditions.
- Calculate completed years on the date specified there and compare with the exact “completed” wording.
- Check whether your education meets the minimum; a higher qualification changes some age rules, but not every post.
- Keep the required proof of birth date and concession ready. Section 4.1.6 describes accepted documents and the consequences of missing proof.
For contrast, a different Group II/IIA exam has its own criteria in the 2025 Group II/IIA notification. Do not reuse Group IV numbers for it. See our Group II/IIA posts and exam notes and OMR instruction guide. Only an official notification decides eligibility; this page shows how to read it.
