TNPSC Group IV Salary: Official Pay Levels and In-Hand Explained
TNPSC Group IV Salary: Pay Levels versus Take-home Pay
A single salary figure cannot describe every Group IV post. The official TNPSC Group IV Notification 07/2025, section 3 lists the pay level next to each post. The Tamil Nadu Revised Pay Rules, 2017, Schedule I gives the base-pay range for each level. Both sources are needed: the notification tells you the post level; the pay matrix tells you its base-pay scale. Neither source by itself guarantees an employee’s current take-home amount.
Examples from the 2025 recruitment
- Village Administrative Officer (VAO): Level 8 in the notification; the cited pay matrix gives Level 8 a base-pay range of ₹19,500–₹62,000.
- Junior Assistant and Typist: the notified entries are at Level 8. Check the exact post code and employing organisation: a familiar job title can appear in more than one department.
- Steno Typist Grade III: Level 10 for the cited entry; Schedule I lists Level 10 as ₹20,600–₹65,500 basic pay.
- Field Assistant: Level 6 in the cited notification; the matrix lists ₹18,500–₹58,600 as its basic-pay range.
- Forest Watcher: Level 3 for the cited entries; the matrix lists ₹16,600–₹52,400 as its basic-pay range.
These are pay-matrix ranges, not a promise that a new recruit starts at the maximum. Some listed posts are in organisations with a different retirement or benefit arrangement; read the CPS/EPF notes alongside the specific post.
Basic, gross and in-hand are different
Basic pay is the applicable cell in the pay matrix. Gross pay may include admissible allowances, such as dearness allowance and house-rent allowance, under the rules in force at the time of appointment. In-hand pay is what remains after applicable contributions, tax and other deductions. Posting location, employment arrangement and later pay revisions matter, so a round ₹20,000–₹40,000 estimate is not an official salary quote.
How to verify an offer
- Find the matching post name and code in the current TNPSC notification, not an old recruitment list.
- Note its level of pay and whether the entry carries a CPS or EPF notation.
- Read the government pay matrix or current pay revision for that level; compare only like with like.
- For your take-home amount, ask the recruiting department for the current allowance and deduction details of your appointment.
Does VAO have the same salary as all Group IV posts? No. The 2025 table assigns different levels to different posts. Is Level 8 salary always ₹62,000? No. That figure is the top of a base-pay range in the cited 2017 matrix, not typical starting or in-hand pay.
