TRB: secondary grade teacher, PG assistant, assistant professor

English
Ask ten aspirants what the TRB syllabus is and you will get one answer, as if the board ran a single exam. It does not. This page separates the three posts people ask about most, says what each one needs, and warns about the mix-ups that cost people a cycle. The vacancy counts, age limits and pay figures belong to each year’s notification, so none are made up here.
One board, three different books
TRB hires for government schools and for government arts and science colleges. The old pages here were one essay with the post name changed. The work is not the same, so the book is not the same.
- Secondary Grade Teacher is the primary school. You need the TET Paper I certificate and the teacher qualification that notification lists. You revise primary subjects and how a child learns them.
- PG Assistant is the higher secondary school. You need a postgraduate degree in the subject you will teach. A general degree does not stand in. You revise that one higher-secondary subject in depth.
- Assistant Professor is not a school post. It is a government college. The usual gate is a postgraduate degree plus NET or SLET, or the research degree that notification accepts. You revise the college syllabus of one discipline.
The same board also runs selections for graduate teachers, physical education teachers and special teachers, among others. This page sticks to the three above.
What each person does all day
- Secondary Grade Teacher: teaches Tamil, mathematics and environmental studies to the same class. Teaching a five-year-old to form letters is the job. Patience is the main skill.
- PG Assistant: teaches one subject in depth to classes 11 and 12, and the board-exam result is the yardstick of the work.
- Assistant Professor: college classes, the discipline’s syllabus, research and student guidance. School teaching technique does not carry over.
Do not ask which post is “higher.” Ask which age group you would like to spend every working day with.
Do not confuse this with TET
TET issues a certificate. A TRB notification fills a vacancy. The secondary grade teacher needs the certificate first. The PG assistant and the assistant professor are not appointed because someone passed TET. If a guide calls all three “the TRB syllabus,” it has nothing left to teach you. For the certificate itself, see TN TET Paper I and Paper II.
Notifications do not arrive every year on a date you can circle. They arrive when vacancies are sanctioned, and the window is short. Keep the degree certificate and the community certificate ready instead of waiting to collect them after the PDF is out.
How to prepare for each
- Secondary Grade Teacher: primary-level subject basics, child development and teaching method. The ability to explain a simple thing simply is what gets tested.
- PG Assistant: the depth of your own postgraduate subject. Revise the undergraduate base as well. Watch for any teaching-method section in the notification, and expect a B.Ed to be asked for in addition to the degree.
- Assistant Professor: the college syllabus of your discipline and research method. If you have not cleared NET or SLET yet, begin there, because a TRB notification means little without it.
- No single set of notes serves all three. Preparing for two posts at once usually means preparing half for each.
Which paper to practise
Use a previous paper for your post only. A secondary grade paper will not show you the depth of a PG subject, and a college paper will not show you class 5 method. Write it closed and timed. Split the misses into a missing idea, a misread line, and a lost clock.
The cut-off is the last selected mark in your category that year. It is not a promise about next year. Read your own category, not the open-category headline.
What to do while you wait for a notification
The waiting is the hardest part of this exam, and the gap can run to a year or more. People who use it well do three things. They finish whatever eligibility is still missing, such as TET for the primary post or NET or SLET for the college post. They keep teaching in some form, even tuition, so that the subject stays active in the head. And they keep a monthly rhythm of old-paper practice rather than stopping and then trying to restart in a panic. Someone who begins serious preparation only after the notification is out is, in most cases, already late.
Mistakes that cost a cycle
- Preparing from a guide titled “TRB” without checking which post it is written for.
- Assuming TET covers the higher secondary or college posts.
- Applying without checking that the degree subject matches the notification’s subject name.
- Reading only the open-category cut-off and ignoring your own category’s figure.
Pay and the name of the degree
The three posts sit on different pay levels. The level in the notification is not take-home pay, and dearness allowance moves.
At verification, the subject printed on your degree has to match the subject printed on the vacancy. A neighbouring subject is still a different subject. Before the notification comes out, compare the name on your mark sheet with the names the board has used in past notifications. If there is a gap, find out early whether an equivalence order exists, because that paperwork cannot be done in the last three days of the window.
The board publishes on trb.tn.gov.in. Read the notification there before you act on a summary of it.
