TN TET Paper I and Paper II: a certificate, not a posting

- அதிகாரப்பூர்வ தளம் trb.tn.gov.in.
English
Most of the confusion around TN TET comes from one wrong picture: that it is a recruitment exam with a rank list. It is not. This page explains what the test is for, how the two papers differ, why the child-development section decides more results than people expect, and what happens after you pass. Anything that changes between years, like the qualifying percentage, is left to the notification.
A certificate, not a posting
TN TET qualifies you to be considered for a teaching post. It does not appoint you to a school. TRB recruitment is the later notification that actually hires. People lose a year by treating a TET score as a rank list, or by applying for a teacher vacancy without the certificate the vacancy demands.
Why the test exists
Under the Right to Education Act, the National Council for Teacher Education laid down that a person must pass a Teacher Eligibility Test to teach in schools covered by the Act. In Tamil Nadu the Teachers Recruitment Board conducts it. The thinking behind it is simple: a degree shows you know a subject, and the test checks whether you also understand how a child learns it.
In 2025 the Supreme Court was reported to have held that TET also applies to teachers already in service, with conditions. If you are already teaching, do not rely on a forum summary. Read the current order and the board’s own notice.
Paper I and Paper II
- Paper I is for classes 1 to 5. Child development and pedagogy, Tamil, English, mathematics and environmental studies.
- Paper II is for classes 6 to 8. Child development and pedagogy, two languages, and then mathematics and science or social science, depending on what you intend to teach.
- The primary paper and the upper-primary paper do not share a book. Writing class-5 method into the class-8 paper does not score.
- Paper I usually asks for higher secondary plus an elementary teacher qualification, and Paper II usually asks for a degree plus a B.Ed or equivalent. Trust the list in your year’s notification, not this sentence.
The section most people postpone is child development and pedagogy. It does not look like a school subject, so it gets the last week. That section is where the paper separates a graduate who knows the chapter from a person who can teach it.
How to study the child-development section
- Memorising the names of theories is not enough. Picture a classroom and ask “which approach suits this child?” The questions are often set that way.
- Make a one-page summary under headings: how children learn, stages of development, learning difficulties, inclusive education and assessment.
- Theorists and their ideas get mixed. The commonest error is giving one person’s idea to another person’s name. Study similar-sounding ideas side by side, two at a time, so the difference sticks.
- Practise questions that describe a situation, because the section tests judgment more than recall.
The language papers
The language sections are not only grammar. You will meet a passage to understand, and you will meet questions on how a language is taught. Even a native Tamil speaker loses marks by leaving English for the last week. Touch both languages for a short time every day from the start, instead of cramming them at the end.
A bar, not a cut-off
A recruitment cut-off is the mark of the last person hired. It moves with vacancies. TET is not that. The notification prints a qualifying percentage, one figure for the open category and another for reserved categories. Cross it and the certificate is issued. Miss it and there is no certificate that year, however many vacancies the state has.
Do not build a TET plan around “beat last year’s last candidate.” There is no last candidate. There is a bar.
The validity period of the certificate has changed as the rules changed. Read the present rule in the notification rather than an older blog post.
Sit an old paper timed. Count the pedagogy questions you miss on their own. If that count does not fall, more mathematics revision will not fix the paper.
Which paper should you write?
Choose by the class you want to teach and the qualification you hold, not by which paper looks easier. If your qualifications allow you to write both papers, many candidates do, and that is worth considering because the pedagogy section is shared in spirit, so the extra effort is smaller than it sounds. But a second paper means a second set of subject notes, so do not decide this on the application deadline day. Decide it when you start preparing.
Mistakes I see repeated
- Starting with the subject you like and reaching pedagogy in the last week.
- Reading the answer key straight after a mock instead of re-attempting the wrong questions a few days later.
- Assuming that a high score in one year promises a posting. The certificate and the appointment are different things.
- Applying with a name or date of birth that does not match the certificates. Correct the record early, because correction takes longer than the application window.
- Forgetting that the paper is long. Practise sitting for the full duration, not only in short bursts, so that the last section is not written with a tired head.
After the certificate
Keep the certificate and wait for the TRB notification for the post you want. That notification has its own age and its own degree list. The same board publishes both, at trb.tn.gov.in. They are still two different applications.
How the TET score counts towards an appointment has differed between recruitment cycles. Do not trust an old article on the weightage. Read the selection method in the recruitment notification when it is published. The posts themselves are explained on the TRB teacher posts page.
Passing and then waiting can take years. Use that gap to keep your subject sharp and to spend time with children in some form, tuition or volunteering, so that teaching is not new to you when the notification arrives.
