MRB: nurse, pharmacist, lab technician, health inspector

English
If you have ever opened an MRB preparation page and found the same paragraph repeated with “Staff Nurse” replaced by “Pharmacist”, you already know the problem this page tries to fix. These are four different careers that happen to share one recruiting board. Below is how they differ, what to read for each, and what to check in the notification before you apply. Figures that change each year are left to the notification.
Four jobs, four syllabi
MRB fills Tamil Nadu’s health services. The old pages on this site treated Staff Nurse, Pharmacist, Lab Technician and Health Inspector as four copies of one article. They are not. A candidate who revises one of them is not prepared for the other three.
- Staff Nurse works the ward and the primary health centre. The paper follows nursing: bedside care, drugs given to a patient, basic clinical judgment.
- Pharmacist works the dispensary. The paper follows pharmacy and the drug rules, not ward procedure.
- Lab Technician works the sample and the report. The paper follows laboratory method.
- Health Inspector is the field, not the bed. Sanitation, water, outbreaks. A nursing guide will not answer that paper.
What a normal day looks like for each
It helps to picture the working day before you choose, because the exam is only the entrance.
- Staff Nurse: ward rounds, giving drugs on time, charting, handovers between shifts, and night duty. In a primary health centre add antenatal care, child care and vaccination.
- Pharmacist: reading the prescription, picking and giving the right drug in the right quantity, watching stock and expiry dates, and keeping the records straight.
- Lab Technician: collecting and testing blood, urine and other samples, and writing reports where one wrong digit can change the treatment.
- Health Inspector: walking the village or ward, taking drinking-water samples, supervising mosquito control, inspecting food shops, and running outbreak control. Most of this is outdoors, in heat and in rain.
“Which of the four is easiest?” is the wrong question. Ask which one matches the course you finished and the work you can do for thirty years.
What to read for each paper
The actual syllabus is whatever that year’s notification says. These are the usual subject areas of each course, so you know where your effort goes and which notes are no use to you.
- Staff Nurse: fundamentals of nursing, medical-surgical nursing, obstetrics and midwifery, child health, mental health, community health and nutrition.
- Pharmacist: pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology, pharmacognosy, hospital pharmacy, and pharmacy law and ethics.
- Lab Technician: haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, clinical pathology, blood banking and laboratory safety.
- Health Inspector: public health, communicable diseases, environmental sanitation, water supply, vector control, food safety, vital statistics and health education.
Notice how little overlap there is. A nursing paper asks about drugs as they affect a patient. A pharmacy paper asks about drugs as products and as law. Reading one set of notes for both is how both go badly.
The certificate is the gate
The notification names the diploma or degree for that post. A nursing qualification does not unlock the pharmacist vacancy, and a laboratory diploma does not unlock the ward. Age is taken on the date the notification names, with the relaxation printed in that table and nowhere else.
These posts commonly require registration with the relevant state council, such as the nurses’ council for nurses and the pharmacy council for pharmacists. If your registration lapsed or was never transferred, fix it now, because renewal offices are slow and the application window is short.
There is no useful “MRB general knowledge” paper sitting underneath all four. If a page offers one syllabus for every MRB post, it was written by swapping the job title.
How the score works
The cut-off is the mark of the last person selected in your category that year. It moves when vacancies, crowd or paper difficulty move. Read your own category. A reserved-category candidate who also clears the open cut-off is often counted on the open list. That rule is in the notification, not in a coaching slogan.
In some past cycles, experience or contract service in a government health institution was given extra weightage. Whether your notification does this, and what proof it wants, is something to check early. If it does, collect your service certificates before the application closes rather than after.
Write an old paper closed and timed. Then split the misses: the subject was new, the sentence was misread, or the clock died. Only the first of those is fixed by reading another chapter.
Small habits that save marks in a technical paper
- Learn units and abbreviations properly. Many wrong answers in a pharmacy or laboratory paper are a unit slip, not ignorance.
- For drug questions, learn the group first, then the examples. Memorising forty names with no group is the hardest way to do it.
- Make a one-page sheet of the things you keep forgetting and read only that sheet in the last week.
- If you studied in Tamil medium and the paper is bilingual, learn the English term next to the Tamil one. The question may use either.
Pay and posting
Each post sits on a pay level in the state matrix. The level is not the amount credited to the account. Dearness allowance changes, so a rupee salary copied from last year’s blog is not this year’s pay.
The nurse’s day is a hospital round, with night shifts. The health inspector’s day is outside, and during an outbreak it has no clock. Choosing between them on the starting pay cell alone misses the work.
