TNPSC Indian Economy — Study Notes & Key Topics

Fundamentals, planning, budget & schemes for TNPSC

Economy questions in TNPSC are concept-plus-current-affairs. These notes cover the fundamentals, planning, money and banking, the budget and the key welfare schemes (national and Tamil Nadu).

Key topics to cover

  • Basics: national income, GDP/GNP, sectors of the economy
  • Economic planning and NITI Aayog
  • Money, banking and the RBI
  • Public finance: budget, taxes (incl. GST) and deficits
  • Agriculture, industry and services
  • Poverty, employment and welfare schemes (national & Tamil Nadu)

How to study this subject for TNPSC

  1. Build the concepts first, then attach current data via daily current affairs.
  2. Track budget and scheme updates every year — high repeat value.
  3. Learn Tamil Nadu-specific schemes and economic indicators.
  4. Solve previous year economy questions to calibrate depth.

Economy: concepts before current numbers

The 2025 Group IV official General Studies Unit V combines Indian Economy with Development Administration in Tamil Nadu for 20 questions. It includes the Reserve Bank of India, GST, Union-State resource sharing, agriculture, social justice and state welfare schemes. The unit total covers both subjects; do not claim that every question is only about macroeconomics. Another examination has its own unit distribution.

Build a concept map. GDP measures the value of final goods and services produced within a country over a period, avoiding double-counting intermediate goods. GST is a tax on supply of goods and services, not a direct income tax. A fiscal deficit compares government expenditure with receipts other than borrowing: if expenditure is 100 units and non-borrowing receipts are 85, the gap is 15 units to finance. These simplified examples teach the relationships; actual budget figures must be taken from the budget of the year in question.

Separate institutions by role. RBI deals with monetary policy and banking regulation, while the Finance Commission recommends aspects of tax devolution between the Union and states. When revising a welfare scheme, note its issuing government, target group, eligibility and source date instead of memorising a name alone. Compare those notes with the published syllabus and the current notification.
